Airport Transit Plan

The Airport Authority is always looking at ways to make your travels to and from San Diego International Airport more convenient.  That’s why Airport Authority planners have been working on the Airport Transit Plan to implement convenient transit service for travelers while planning long-term solutions to ease vehicle congestion around the airport.  Its goal is to increase transit usage by airport users to five percent (the national average) over the next three to five years.

When adopted, the Airport Transit Plan will implement transit improvements to serve regional commuters to and from San Diego International Airport.  While it complements the new facilities proposed in the Terminal Development Program, the Airport Transit Plan includes improvements to existing transit service that can be implemented right now.  Some proposed recommendations in the Airport Transit Plan are:

One – Three Years

  • Improve customer service; provide more information about transit options/routes
  • Add low-floor buses for easier access for travelers carrying luggage
  • Increase the Flyer frequency-time to less than 12 minutes
  • Add Coaster service to night and weekend schedules
  • Add an express bus route from the Old Town Transit Center non-stop to the terminals

Three – Five Years

  • Build dedicated commuter bus lanes to ease congestion and reduce wait times
  • Operate Flyaway remote check-in terminals along the Interstate I-15 and I-805 along with coach bus service, and bag-check-in corridors and secure parking

Five+ Years

  • Consolidated bus to a north side rental car facility
  • Automated people movers connecting north side of airfield to terminals on south side
  • Extend trolley connection to airport terminals
  • Destination Lindbergh is addressing long-term transportation challenges and the addition of an inter-modal Transit Center as part of long-term planning for Lindbergh Field. Click here to learn more.

Transit Access Planning

The Airport Transit/Roadway Committee of the Airport Authority and regional transit and transportation agencies have been working together to develop the Airport Transit Plan.

The purpose of the Airport Transit/Roadway Committee is to identify potential enhancements to the transportation system serving San Diego International Airport and advise airport officials on recommendations and improvements.  The committee tackles tough issues like transit and road access to San Diego International Airport and how to increase opportunities to enhance transit access to and from the airport and surrounding communities.  The Committee will also develop cost estimates for implementation.

The Airport Transit Plan was developed in collaboration with regional transit and transportation agencies and stakeholders including:

  • San Diego County Regional Airport Authority
  • San Diego Association of Governments
  • North County Transit District
  • California Department of Transportation
  • Metropolitan Transit System
  • City of San Diego
  • Centre City Development Corporation
  • San Diego Unified Port District
  • Federal Aviation Administration
  • California Coastal Commission
  • California State Parks – Old Town
